Correcting Digestive Imbalances
A well functioning digestive system is designed to process your food to best facilitate the healing process. When healing from an injury, surgery or any health issue, processing your food properly enables you to heal. The following shows where in your digestive system different symptoms originate and how to target care to specific pieces of your digestive system.

Stomach - Breaks Down Proteins

SYMPTOMS OF DISTRESS

  • Acid reflux

  • Halitosis

  • Stomach pain

ROOT CAUSE: acid & enzyme imbalance within the stomach

 

REMEDY: Honey and Apple cider vinegar (both raw and unpasteurized)- Combine equal parts honey and apple cider vinegar and store in the refrigerator in a glass jar.  If you need to adjust the quantity of the ingredients to make it palatable, the remedy will still be effective. Before all meals, mix about 2 tablespoons of the mixture in about â…“ cup of warm water and drink.

Mouth- breaks down sugars

SYMPTOMS OF DISTRESS 

  • Fluctuations in blood sugar

  • Bloating

  • Gas

  • Dry mouth

  • Cavities

  • Irritated gums

  • Halitosis

ROOT CAUSE: poor saliva production

 

REMEDY: To stimulate saliva production, eat GINGER with all meals. You can cook it into your food, drink it as a tea, eat pieces of crystallized ginger or take a capsule of ginger powder

Duodenum/Upper small intestine - breaks down fats

SYMPTOMS OF DISTRESS  

  • Exhaustion, 

  • Blood sugar fluctuation, 

  • Pain in mid-belly area                                                                        (just below the ribs)

  • Dryness in skin, mucus,                                                              membranes, and hair, 

  • Achy joints

ROOT CAUSE: interruption of normal digestion.

E.G., long-term use of medication, surgery, anesthesia, dental work, stress, chronic pain, travel, poor diet, lack of sleep,, etc.

 

REMEDY: Peppermint/Ginger with all meals  Also, for diabetes controlled with diet and/or medication:  Cedar Berry with all meals

SYMPTOMS OF DISTRESS

  • Halitosis/bad breath

  • Skin blemishes

  • Constipation

  • Low back, upper leg and                                                                      hip pain

ROOT CAUSE:  Dehydration, Poor diet deficient in healthy fats and fiber with excessive amounts of animal products.  


 

REMEDY:  Drink more water, increase healthy fats and fibers in the diet (see the green smoothie recipe) and increase exercise which moves the legs, belly and lower back (walking, bicycling, swimming etc.). Many natural remedies and herbs will work to  break the cycle of chronic constipation (see the handout)

SYMPTOMS OF DISTRESS 

  • Gas

  • Bloating

  • Lack of belly sounds and/or movement

  • General signs of malnutrition

  • Low back pain/sciatic nerve pain

 

REMEDIES:   

  • Carrot Juice/Raspberry smoothie as a 1 day fast (do not fast if you have unstable blood sugar)

 

  • Bentonite clay twice daily: 

Before a substantial meal, dissolve  ¼- ½ tsp of bentonite clay in  ¼-½ cup warm water or tea. Use boiling water to dissolve the clay, stir well, let it sit and cool for a minute or two and then whisk again. Drink and wait 15 minutes before eating.

 

Do this for 3 weeks if you have poor blood sugar control. This can also be done as an annual cleanse for optimal small intestine function.
